Right now, stop what you are doing. Go outside and look around. Think about the territory where you live, work, or play as a garden. You were placed, by God, in that garden.
Read Genesis 1 out loud. Don’t worry about someone hearing you. Reading the Bible aloud has the power to change the people in your garden.
“In the beginning, God…”
Before anything material existed, there was God. Our Creator is orderly. Made in His image, we are designed to seek order, to make sense of the world around us.
Genesis 1 is an ordered account of God’s actions during the first 7 seven days of history. It is essential to recognize that Genesis 1:2 presents the world as empty and chaotic. There was no light. In Genesis 1:3, God speaks light into the darkness. From that moment onward to this very day, God has been working to bring order to His world.
You and I are part of His plan. We all have a critical role to play in God’s grand story!
The Bible explains that during the first three days of Creation, God created spaces that He filled over the last three days. What was created during days 4-6 cannot exist without what was made during days 1-3.
- What existed first, darkness or light? This question presents another.
- The sun, moon, and stars were not created until day four. What is the source of the earth’s original light?
This series aims to help you slow down and look closely at what God wants you to know.
When reading the Bible, we are often in such a hurry to finish that we miss important details that lead to understanding.
Here is an example. Six times in Genesis 1, we read, “there was evening, and there was morning.” Every day this statement was made; the dark preceded the light. The first hearers of the Bible understood that the beginning of each 24-hour day occurred in the evening at sunset.
At the end of each of the first five days of Creation, God saw that what He had done “was good.” His crowning creative work was completed on the sixth day. He filled the land with animals on that day and created the first humans. At the end of that day, God looked at all He had done and declared it all “very good.”
The Hebrew title of the Bible’s first book is “Bereshit.” It means “beginnings.”
Genesis 1 presents the satellite view of the “beginning” of this world.
Genesis 2 provides a magnifying glass look at the sixth day of Creation.
Read Genesis 2 now. Remember, read it out loud so others can hear. Even if no one is around, listen to your words. Faith comes by hearing!
The first two chapters of Genesis reveal a perfect world no one has experienced today. Start a conversation with others about the first instructions given to mankind by God.

Read Genesis 1:1-2:25
- The first event in the Bible is CREATION: “In the beginning God created…”
- There is a sequence. God created the heavens and the earth. Then God said, ‘Let there be light.”
- There is a time frame. From the point God spoke His light into the darkness, the earth we occupy was created in six days.
- There is order. Over the first three days, God created something that was filled over the second three day period.
- God gave a commentary on each day’s work. Individually, “It is good.” All together, “It is very good!”
- God placed the first couple in a garden to be enjoyed. There was just one rule to obey.
Points To Ponder
- Identify the main character of Genesis 1 & 2.
- Briefly describe His work. Was it flawed in any way?
- What instructions were given by God on the sixth day? Who did He speak to?
- What was accomplished on the seventh day?
Make an “I Will” Statement:
Accountability is something we all need, but few of us desire. Real accountability is when one person helps another to follow through on implementing a vital decision. One simple statement of “I will…” made to a trustworthy individual activates accountability.
- As a result of your study of Genesis 1 & 2, what “I will” statement will you make concerning something you will do or think differently about starting right now?
- Who will you make the statement to in the next 24 hours, asking them to hold you accountable for following through on your decision?
