When Abram received his commission to “go,” he left everything behind. Where was Abram going? Abram was headed for a land that God was going to show him. Not much detail was provided. All Abram was told by God was, “I will show you.” Men, if you are married, try and picture what must have happened next.
Abram: Sarai! Sweetie! Where are you? I have some really exciting news. Ah, there you are. Sarai: What is it, husband? Abram: We’re moving. Sarai: WHAAAT? Abram: God spoke to me! Sarai: You talked to who? Abram: God! Sarai: God, really? Which one? Your father worships many and I don’t think he has ever heard any one of them speak. Have you been drinking again? Abram: Sarai, my love, I am telling you the truth. God spoke to me and told me to pack up and follow Him. Sarai: Where did God say we are going? Abram: He didn’t say, exactly. Sarai: Let me get this straight. God spoke you, told you to leave our home, our country, our relatives, and everything else we value to follow Him to a land that He will show you. Is that about right? Anything else. Communication is a good thing, you know. Do you have any more details about this little adventure you want me to join you in? Abram: Oh, yeah! Almost forgot. God said He was going to make me a great nation, that He would bless me and make my name great. He is going to bless those that bless me and curse those that curse me. And get this, through our descendants all the familes of the world will receive His blessing! Sarai: Wow! Why didn’t you tell me that in the first place. Let’s get moving. Go talk to that nice man down at Rider Rent A Camel. I have to start packing the kitchen right now. Hurry up. We’re burning daylight!
Now, I know that the speculative conversation above never happened. But, at some point Abram had to have gone to Sarai to tell her about his conversation with God and that they were going to follow Him, wherever He led. Sarai followed God, too! What does that say about her?
My wife has demonstrated her great faith in God time after time. I am a dreamer, always have been. There have been critical moments in our life together where I have felt certain that we needed to do something different in a major way. A couple of times this has been as a result of what I believed to be a clear change of direction given from God. Every time, my wife has supported my decision. She is a lot like Sarai.
Before we close, here is one more thought to consider. Abram and Sarai, did not go alone into Canaan. They were told that God would show them the land they were going to. His presence in our obedient taking of ground is essential for success. At times it may seem as if we are all alone. It is in those times that we must ask ourselves, “Am I following God, or is this really all about me?” But, when God tells us to do something He provides everything, including His assurance that He will always be with us.
For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6b
Arlie: Honey, thank you for going with me everywhere I have asked you to go. I have learned a lot about faith from you!
Noemi: Ok, where are we going this time, and have you called Rider Rent A Camel yet?
Think About It
When your children look back on the story of your family, what will they remember about where their parents went with God and how He provided and blessed?
What can you do to train and prepare your children to listen to the direction God wants to take them and follow Him with their heart?
