Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. Genesis 9:1b
I am struck with the fact that even though man continually rebels against God’s directly spoken will, His plans for mankind are still accomplished. This is true both for nations and for individuals. It is not possible for God’s plans to be derailed.
Following the flood, God’s plan for Noah’s descendants was for them to have lots of children and spread out over the surface of the earth. Sound familiar? We read about a similar command from God to Adam and Eve in Genesis 1:29. “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth” followed by His command to “subdue” the earth and rule over everything God had created.
Doesn’t the idea of ruling indicate that something wild, something unruly needs to be brought into order? If everything was perfect, why would the world need to be subdued? Jules Verne wrote “War of the Worlds.” One day war broke out on earth between humanity and a previously unseen alien army. Truth be known, that war is a reality. No, I am not suggesting that aliens from another planet are the cause of all the dysfunction and death in the world today. But, make no mistake, there is a war being waged just beyond our five senses. It is a war between spiritual power, between God and Satan.
You see, the purpose for mankind’s sexuality, his being made both male and female is to fulfill God’s desire that all creation shout the story of His glory. So, the function of God’s ordained union of one man and one woman was expressly designed by God to fulfill His proclamation purposes. Where was the first battle line drawn in the spiritual war between God and Satan? It was in the union of the man and the woman. The sexual revolution did not begin in the 1960’s. It started in the Garden of Eden.
Following the flood, Satan took another tack. His appeal was the same. “You can be like God. Make a name for yourselves. Forget about spreading His story in all the earth. Make your own story.”
On the Plain of Shinar, Noah’s descendants had three things going for them.
There was a goal, an objective to make a name for themselves.
There was unity in the people to work together in achieving that goal.
There was very strong communication on humanity’s enabling collaboration.
These three ingredients are essential to the effective pursuit of any grand venture, whether it be a company or a country. In Genesis 11, Noah’s family multiplied itself. But there was fourth essential ingredient that was missing from their collective labor. Without out it, failure in achieving their desired result was assured. In fact, it was doomed from the beginning.
What was the missing ingredient? Obedience to God’s will. Without God’s blessing and empowerment nothing good will ever happen. The only way to please God and have His blessing on our work is to do what He says. This has nothing to do with our personal salvation. It has everything to do with what comes after we are saved from certain destruction.
What did God do to keep His plan for history on track at the Tower of Babel. He confused the languages of Noah’s descendants and forced them to do what He wanted all along.
Think About It
In your own life, are you experiencing success according to the standards of the world around us or does your success measure up to God’s expressed will for you? Are you pursuing God’s will? How?
What are the consequences of disrupted communication in the relationships Gods has given you at home, at work, and where you worship?
