The New Testament in the
Old Testament is concealed.
The Old Testament in the
New Testament is revealed.
This easy to remember saying simply means that the New Testament rests on the teaching of the Old Testament. It is impossible to fully understand the ministry of Jesus and the Apostles without first learning about the people, places, and events of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Old Testament.
Genesis – Beginnings
Genesis, the first book of the Bible, records the beginning of all things. Genesis 1 -11 tells about four great events (Creation, Fall, Flood, and Nations). The origin of the Nation of Israel is seen in the lives of four great men (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph). Their life stories are chronicled from Genesis 12 through 50.
Bible Covenants – Good News & Bad News
Wherever people live together, agreements are made that govern the way that they relate to one another. Most of these are oral agreements. Some, are informal and flexible. Others are codified and written down. There are eight foundational agreements that God established with humanity in the Old Testament. They are called covenants. Think about a covenant as a binding legal document. Four of the eight Bible covenants are found in the first twelve chapters of Genesis.
Bible Covenants fall into two categories, conditional and unconditional. A conditional covenant requires the active participation of two parties if it is to remain binding on either one . If one party in the agreement fails to keep their responsibilities within the covenant, then the other party is no longer legally responsible to keep their side of the covenant. Conditional covenants are governed by an if – then equation. This simply means, If you do your part, I will do mine. In a conditional Bible covenant , if God’s partner in the agreement failed to uphold their end of the bargain, God was no longer bound by it. When God declared the covenant broken, it was no longer in force. Out of the eight Bible covenants we will be discussing, only two of are conditional. Conditional covenants are always bad news for those who break them.
In an unconditional covenant, only one party is required to do anything. The equation that governs an unconditional covenant is I will. In the six unconditional Bible covenants, it is God who said I will. God always does what He says He will do in an unconditional covenant. All of the unconditional covenants God made in the Old Testament are still in effect today. Because God always keeps His word, the unconditional Bible covenants are good news for everybody!
These eight covenant agreements between God and mankind provide the the skeletal structure of the Bible. Wherever you are reading in God’s Word at any given time, simply ask yourself three questions:
1. What covenants were in force during that period of time? 2. Who were the parties in covenant with each other? 3. What requirements were in place for the parties in covenant with each other?
Your knowledge of the eight Bible covenants listed above and your ability to answer these three simple questions is the key to understanding of the story of the glory of God.
