Hypothesis: A person’s depth perception requires that both of their eyes be used to establish the exact position of an object directly in front of them.
1. Repeat the experiment below several times. Follow the instructions exactly. Make a mental note of what happens each time.
2. Close your right eye and keep it closed.
3. With your eye closed, lift your hands up out to the side of your body. Your hands should be outside the field of your peripheral vision.
4. Keeping your right eye closed, quickly bring the tips of your opposing index fingers together in front of you. Do not slow down as your finger tips get closer to the meeting point.
5. Repeat this several times.
6. Now repeat the experiment with both of your eyes open.
Results: What happened?
Hypothesis Finding: True or False
Over time, an individual’s finger tips will arrive at a slightly different point more frequently when only one eye is used as compared to when both eyes are used. The hypothesis is true. What is proven to be true in the physical world frequently teaches something equally true about the spiritual world.
People often assume that I am Jewish. I am a Gentile believer in Jesus. Before coming to faith, God was preparing the soil of my life for what was ahead. I was fortunate to have a number of Jewish friends and classmates who frequently invited me to their homes and synagogues. Later, when I placed my faith in Messiah Yeshua and began to read the Bible for myself, both of my eyes were wide open. I was able to see Jesus as a 1st Century Jew who had been sent to tell the story of God’s glory within the context of the 1st Century Jewish world. From there, the Gospel went forth into the entire world without losing its connection to the Jewish Scriptures and the Jewish people. I thank God for allowing me to see His plan for the ages with both of my eyes, but I still have much to learn… and always will!
I want to state something very plainly. Starting at Pentecost and continuing until this very day, Satan has done everything in his power to poke out one or both of the eyes of believers everywhere. This is true of both Gentile & Jewish believers. He has had quite a bit of success. This has produced lack of discernment, dysfunction, and death. The one new man entity that Paul spoke of in Ephesians 2:15 is virtually non-existent.
In some places, this is not the case. Israel College of the Bible has seen God at work in unprecedented ways over the last ten years. With a student population of over 100 people, Israeli Jews and Arabs have been studying God’s Word together and gaining ministry skills and tools for outreach and discipleship in their own country. International students have joined them by participated in ICB’s popular Year In Israel Program. I have had the privilege of attending chapel at ICB to experience first hand the very presence of God among the men, women, students, and faculty of Israel College of the Bible.
I want to introduce you to Dr. Erez Soref, a Jewish believer and president of Israel College of the Bible. The video you are invited to watch now was filmed in January 2013 during a tour I led for T Bar M Camps of New Braunfels, Texas. Dr. Soref shared with our group why throughout this age most Jewish believers have been rejected by their own families and shunned by much of the Church. It is my prayer that God will use Between a Rock and Hard Place to open both of your eyes to what can be done to bring healing and unity in the Body of Messiah between Jewish and Gentile believers in Jesus.
P.S. – If you live in or near San Antonio, Texas consider this as an invitation to worship at Wayside Chapel on Sunday, May 26th. Dr. Soref will be speaking at both the 9:15 AM and 11 AM services about what God is doing in Israel and why this is important to believers everywhere. Following the 11 AM service, a luncheon will be held where Dr. Soref will present “Between a Rock and Hard Place” and answer some questions. The cost of the luncheon is $6 per person. Reservations are required so that we can make sure to prepare the right amount of food. You can make your reservations here.
