God doesn’t make junk. All that He created was made with excellence in mind. Unlike the manufacturers of some products today, God’s creation was not designed for obsolescence. It was made to last. Forever! How could something flawed ever bring glory to the One who is perfect in every aspect of His being? For this reason, His Creation reflected His own perfection.
Read Genesis 1:1-3:24
I love great movie soundtrack music. It rivets your attention and imagination on the screen, drawing you in to the story line. It is impossible to imagine an overture that could do justice to Genesis 1:1-31. One minute there was absolutely nothing. Six literal days later, God’s creative work was finished, without any flaws of any kind.
Genesis 2:1-25 provides an elaboration on the signature work of God’s hands. His crowning achievement was man. Adam was made first, given fulfilling and enjoyable work to do, and then God spoke a word of warning.
From the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,
for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.
What this all about? I mean really, if the world and all that is in it including the man himself was created in absolute perfection, why was there a need for this stern warning? Adam did not even know what death was at this point, nothing had ever died. It was only after Adam had been given the command not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil that Adam’s life partner was created from one of his ribs.
This dissonant note of impending danger that was sounded in Genesis 2:17 foreshadows a major shift in the cosmos. Man is not the center of the universe. There are things God knows that man never will. It makes no difference how curious man may be or how rational he thinks he is. Much of what is happening behind the ability of our own perceptions, may never be fully disclosed to mankind in this world or the next. It is what it is.
Genesis 1 and 2 establishes the rightness and goodness of God. Contrast Him with the being introduced in In Genesis 3:1-24. He too was once created in perfection. He existed before the the day on which God said, “Let there be light.” This being is not God, but he wants to be. And so, like a selfish child who is told that he cannot have what a sibling has, Satan set about to destroy God’s prized possession in all the earth.
For the last 6,000 years, God’s creation has suffered the consequences of what was lost in the Garden of Eden when Adam stood silently by to watch his bride take the lead in eating from the forbidden tree and then eating of it himself. in that moment, all was lost. The creation and fall of Adam and Eve marked an end to God’s relationship with mankind.
Or Did it?
Satan was put on notice that his days were numbered. He would come to a day of crushing defeat. The man and the woman were promised that even though they had seemingly ruined everything, God would make a way for their restoration to relationship with Him. What they could not do for themselves, God did for them.
All they had to do was believe in the unconditional promises made to them and their physical descendants in Genesis 3:15. Nothing has ever changed. Men and women have always been saved by grace appropriated through belief in what God has said in the time during which they have lived. God’s grace is always available through the simple act of belief.
Could there be a better way to start this New Year than starting a new relationship with the one who created you? All you have to do is just BELIEVE!
