Coach – “Who created man with the ability to create?”
Player – “God.”
Coach – (High Five)
We Are All Admirals
Chisinau is the capital of Moldova and the home of the Admirals Basketball Academy. The coaches of the academy are dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ. All are trained to use our Stories of God strategy with the players they train.
In the room where spiritual equipping takes place for the coaches, there is a poster of the Admiral, David Robinson. Enshrined at the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Admiral could do anything he wanted to on the basketball court. Why do the players of the academy proudly sport David’s nickname on their uniforms? Yes, the Admiral was a basketball phenomenon. But there is more to it than that. David Robinson personally signed the training room poster. There is a Scripture reference inscribed below:
“It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?” – Hebrews 12:7-9
The Admirals Academy players submit to the discipline of coming together after practice and in the homes of their coaches to study the Scriptures. In addition to the skills they learn on the court, the spiritual disciplines they acquire off the court enable them to win the game of life in Jesus Christ. Watching how hard the team members practice on the basketball court, we know that one day some of them will be heroes to future generations of Admirals Academy team members.
Gathering their players together at the end of practice, Admirals coaches ask, “Can I tell you a story?” All of their eyes fasten on “coach.”
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,” they heard him say. Not one looks away. No one is bored. After hearing the story, players often ask, “What’s the connection between the story and playing basketball?”
Playing For Eternity
The Admirals have something that many of the kids of Moldova want. They want to learn how to play basketball. They want to win. Most of these kids want to make a name for themselves. That’s natural, that’s human. But the Admirals have something else these kids want, and they don’t even know it.
The Admiral coaches are earning accolades far more valuable and lasting than David Robinson ever won on the court. Many of the Admirals Academy players already a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. They want to give Him away to those they play with and compete against.
One day, one practice, one story at a time, the players and coaches of the Admirals Academy are winning a lot these days. People are taking notice. Last year one of the Admirals’ teams they played for the national championship of Moldova. But when it is all said and done, the commendation of One Admiral matters most.
“Well done, my good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Master.”
